The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC / Commission) continues to monitor the ongoing water challenges in the jurisdiction of the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality (Metro). The Commission has since January 2024 undertaken various initiatives, such as convening meetings with affected communities; participating in war room meetings; and liaising with and issuing correspondences to various government actors across the three spheres of government.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (“the Commission”) office in Western Cape will be conducting various monitoring activities in the Garden Route District Municipality. Section 184 (1)(c) of the Constitution states that, the Commission must monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.  The role of monitoring and assessing potential and actual human right violations provides the Commission with an opportunity to ensure redress and to ensure that human rights are upheld in the Republic.

In January 2024 the Free State Provincial Office of the South African Human Rights Commission undertook intensive school monitoring activities throughout the Free State Province.

The FSPO visited a number of schools in all five districts, to determine school readiness for the current academic year, as well as to monitor for any possible human rights violations, and other challenges.

The South African Human Rights Commission (“the Commission”) convened an Investigative Inquiry to examine Accessibility to Public Transport In Gauteng For People With Disabilities from 20 to 22 November 2023.

In May 2023, the Gauteng Provincial Office (GPO) received a referral complaint in terms of section 3 of PEPUDA from the High Court (Johannesburg), sitting as an Equality Court. The complaint alleged that the current environment at railway stations, bus stations, and taxi ranks poses a danger to and is not accessible to commuters with disabilities. The Complainant views the current state of affairs within the public transport system as a form of unfair discrimination on the basis of disability.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (“the Commission”) office in the Western Cape will host a meeting of strategic stakeholders regarding challenges encountered by persons with Albinism in accessing certain rights. Persons with Albinism have reported experiencing various challenges relating to their condition. Albinism is a condition which affects 1 in 4000 persons in Southern Africa. Albinism is characterized by hypopigmentation or lack of pigmentation of the hair, skin and eyes, giving persons with albinism a striking, ethereal appearance.

The North West Provincial Office of the Commission (NWPO) will commemorate National Human Rights Day on 20 March 2024. The aim of the commemoration is to remember and celebrate the contribution of past and present-day human rights defenders in advancing human rights in South Africa and the North West Province in particular.

The North West Provincial Office of the Commission will convene a follow-up dialogue with the Traditional Leaders from Barolong boo Ratshidi under the leadership of the Paramount Chief Kgosi Montshioa. The dialogue will be convened under the theme “Bridging the gap between human rights and traditional customs.”

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (Commission) Eastern Cape Provincial Office (ECPO) will be embarking on various monitoring and inspection activities in the O R Tambo and Amathole District Municipalities. This is in accordance with section 184 (1) (b) and (c) of the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa that; the Commission must protect, monitor and assess the observance of human rights in the Republic.

The South African Human Rights Commission’s (“the Commission”) office in the Western Cape will accompany newly appointed Commissioner Aseza Gungubele, on site inspections in the Rawsonville and Worcester region as a continuation of his provincial visits to familiarize himself with the complaints in the province. Following successful school monitoring and stakeholder meetings in January 2024, the Commissioner will travel to Spookiesdorp and Avian Park, to view the conditions under which the respective communities are living.

The workshop is part of empowering the Human Rights Champions who play an important role in different communities and who assist the SAHRC in the advancement of human rights.

The North West Provincial Office of the Commission (NWPO), in collaboration with Commissioner Nomahlubi Khwinana, will conduct school monitoring at various schools in the North West. The purpose of the monitoring is to assess the schools’ readiness for the 2024 academic year, with a particular reference to the state of the infrastructure, availability of LTSM, adequacy of staff and other support services at the various schools.

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) is concerned with the racial tension that occurred at Groblersdal Magistrate Court, in Limpopo Province on the 24th of January 2024 and the increasing number of incidents of violence allegedly motivated by racial divisions in the area. The Commission strongly condemns these acts which appear to be dividing the community of Groblersdal and calls for calm from all parties involved.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) invite members of the media to the launch of the 2021 July Unrest Investigative hearings reports. The two reports will be jointly released by the two Chapter 9 bodies on the investigative work carried out into specific issues following the unrest that occurred in KwaZulu Natal and Gauteng in July 2021.

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC / Commission) has noted the ongoing protest action that commenced on 22 January 2024, by members of the Verulam community and other surrounding areas, regarding the lack of access to water, which has resulted in some of these communities being without water for more than 90 days. On 23 January 2024, the Commission convened an urgent meeting with representatives of the Verulam Water Crisis Committee, Tongaat Civic Association and eThekwini Municipality with a view to address the concerns.
