Media Statement: SAHRC is concerned with the recent and ongoing acts of racial discrimination in some parts of Groblersdal, in Limpopo Province

Wednesday, 31 January 2024

Attention: Editors and Reporters

The South African Human Rights Commission (the Commission) is concerned with the racial tension that occurred at Groblersdal Magistrate Court, in Limpopo Province on the 24th of January 2024 and the increasing number of incidents of violence allegedly motivated by racial divisions in the area. The Commission strongly condemns these acts which appear to be dividing the community of Groblersdal and calls for calm from all parties involved.

The Commission has also noted that on the 24 January 2024, some protesters were allegedly displaying the old South African Flag which had been declared (hate speech by the High Court. The Commission is calling upon all parties to conduct themselves in a manner that does not undermine South African democratic principles and exercise caution during this period.

The Commission is currently working on developing programmes to engage with broader communities of Groblersdal in order to achieve social cohesion, accountability, peace and stability in the area through its SHiNE (Social Harmony Through National Effort) programmes.

The Commission will also be observing the situation and the accused’s bail application today, 31 January 2024 at the Groblersdal Magistrate Court.
